Our History

A Humble Beginning

Founded in 1987, Altona Roosters began as a collusion between players from former strong clubs from the 1950s & 1960s such as Point cook, Laverton, & RAAF Laverton. Laverton were Still competing in the Melbourne Rugby league competition (as it was known then) as late at 1990 and won the MRL premiership in 1988.

Altona Roosters won its first premiership in 1997 when it broke a 2 year streak for a St Kilda Saints Rugby League side that would return to winning ways the following year to begin another steak of 5 grand final victories in a row.

It wasnt until 2003 that Altona Roosters claimed their second premiership after finishing runner-up to the soon-to-be defunct St Kilda Saints in the previous season.

A Powerhouse of Victorian Rugby League

The Roosters then went on to build their legacy as a powerhouse club in victoria with 4 premierships in a row from 2003 to 2006. Altona is the only remaining club to have won 4 First Grade premierships in a row in the NRL Victoria Melbourne competition.

After losing the 2007 grand final by 1 point, the Roosters bounced back to record the highest ever Grand final winning margin on record (Record of scores in Grand finals pre-2000 have been lost according to NRL Victoria) with a 72-10 thrashing of the Moorabbin Rams.

Between 2008 & 2014, only 2 clubs won premierships, Altona Roosters & Sunbury Tigers. There were some very close Grand Finals played between the two sides in that time including a tight 28-26 Victory in 2010 & another existing win in 2012 25-22.

A Major Setback

In 2012 we had a devastating blow, with the loss of our clubhouse due to an accidental electrical fire. All our training equipment, first aid equipment, photos, trophies, years worth of club memorabilia, things that you just can’t replace all gone within minutes.

We soon after moved to our current home at Bruce Comben Reserve in Altona Meadows.

Moving Forward

In 2019, we again hope to continue our 3 year trend of 25 percent growth in participation as well as build towards our 9th men's first grade premiership & our 1st Women's First Grade Premiership.
